A Reality Check for parents of Struggling Students…
The Minister of Education recognizes nearly 300,000 students as "identified" under the umbrella of Special Education. This includes the bright and gifted student who struggles simply because they learn differently. It is estimated that there is nearly half this number again "unidentified" by the Ministry that are being pushed through the system - and often times failing. This makes nearly half a million students who struggle every day in schools across Ontario. The struggling student is nearly half this population - nearly a quarter of a million students! They are the largest body of students represented under the umbrella of special education by far, and they are the least served because they are "invisibly" disabled, and too easy to ignore. Is our education system serving our children equitably or is it failing to serve many of them at all? |
